How could you describe your career path in a few words?
25 years within the media industry working for 5 of the biggest media publishers in the world. Bauer, Hachette, Hearst, News International and Vice. An industry that has to re-invent itself every 2 years which means upskilling every time. You never sit still because the industry doesn't! Certainly not a career for anyone who is happy doing the same thing every day.
I am now CEO of InChief. Part tool, part agency. We merge social information into one place, into something called a F.I.T.T.Y Index (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok and YouTube) to provide the industry with transparency on both sides and build trust. We work with content creators and brands to provide meaningful content on social media and support them like an editorial team at a publishing house. We match, we plan, and we create a strategy around social media execution for brands like Microsoft, DriveScore and Bimble.
When you get surprised by unusual or uncertain context, what do you think?
"Let's go solve this"
I always say to anyone I am thinking of working with.
"If you know where you are going and what you want to do, then I am not the right person for your business"
There are plenty of people who can harvest a business and hold the ship steady. Being able to think and plan around uncertain contexts and come up with navigation is more what I have built my career on.
Being happy with the unknown and building strategies to innovate and evolve business models is the fun bit. The more unusual and uncertain the better.
Based on your experience, what’s the key success factor for a female leader / manager?
If you choose to have children, (which I did) a key success factor is a good support network. Don't think you can do this without Rolls Royce childcare solutions. Without that, in place, you can't rest your mind and you will never be a good female leader.
If you are a female and you don't choose to have children, then remember the women in your team that did!
Unfortunetely women can sometimes be harsher critics on working mums that then men.
